#313: What should this person do?

Hey Reader!

Today at the gym was an epic breakthrough!

My trainer said that my spine's finally unlocked - and I was able to lie down flat on the floor without hurting my neck.

BIG ACHIEVEMENT!

(Kinda felt like Rock Lee unlocking his gates in Naruto! 🔥)

A few weeks ago, when I was doing outreach for my coaching services, I had someone respond to me with a fascinating and complicated situation - they were making money, but they couldn't accurately say how.

This was their situation:

  1. Don’t know what marketing channel is leading to user acquisition
  2. Have Google Analytics, but not configured correctly. Trying out Mixpanel
  3. Don’t know which channels lead to paying users
  4. Google Organic and no UTMs make 60% of traffic. another 30% is from socials.
  5. Don’t know what to double down on.

One thing stood out: “It’s like… hard to reason/analyze if 60% of my data isn’t available to me”

So, based on what I’ve understood about the situation, I think the root cause of all this comes down to a lack of tracking in place.

The first step to solve this would be to get your analytics in place.

There are a few things you can do while you set up tracking:

  1. Run your main landing page urls via https://ahrefs.com/backlink-checker and see where you’re getting your links from. That could give you a list of places where you’d need to update your links with UTM params.
  2. Isolate your funnels. Then, going forward, send different traffic streams to different landing pages and see what happens.
  3. Get qualitative data by speaking to converted customers. It’s not perfect, but it is qualitative data and that can inform further research directions.
  4. Finally, set up a series of growth experiments that you can run.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, but it highlights a few important things you gotta keep in mind:

  1. Get basic analytics up for your business.
  2. When you want to test something, test one thing at a time. Isolate the system and tweak one thing at a time.
  3. Be intentional about your experiments. Just winging it is fun (I know!), but being intentional gets you more money.
